The End.
Here's the deal. I'm trying to determine if starcraft is really worth learning and if the game mechanics are really all that good to begin with. Reading through a few starcraft forums, I see how it took some people years to finally be considered 'good'. They say they spent 10 hours a day learning the motions and memorizing the keyboard movements. I'm thinking to myself, I can't do that, at least not when I barely win anything, the small things I want to remember are forgotten in the intensity; and I'm not going to play against a computer 10 hours a day for two weeks. That's pure boredom we're talking about.
Then other thoughts come to mind. Why am I not enjoying the game much? The stress most likely arises because of how hard it is to use your units wisely and to actually THINK as you play. This is a real time STRATEGY game right? Am I getting the most I can out of this game (strategy wise). I think not.
It has come to my attention quite a few times that absolutely nobody is willing to play on a slower speed type. Now, a slower speed is unlikely to be played because it appears as if the game lags a lot, nobody seems to be able to handle the slower beginning of the game, and people want players with no life to have it easy. Yes, it may be a little boring the first few minutes but when things start being built, it gets interesting. There is something that happens EVERYONE can agree on, when a game suddenly lags, you control everything better. You will be very efficient with your moves and strategy. It's a sure thing. The best thing about slowing the speed down is that people are on a more even playing field. There's not much of a hotkey advantage. The speed hotkeying skill is perhaps the only thing that causes people to be good, it's not always the strategy. It shouldn't be such a problem because they can still keep the hotkey advantage at slower speeds.
Yes, I am a noob, I'll admit that to anyone. But this is a GAME and I want to enjoy the gameplay to the fullest without having to hotkey as if it's second nature. It ruins the game a bit. I wouldn't ask the high apm people and gosu players to play on a slower speed but want the noob players to slow it down. It doesn't have to be on normal speed. Fast and faster will do fine. Hell, the game is practically made for normal speed! People want to speed it up only because it becomes more difficult the faster you go, then they claim it makes the game more exciting. I disagree. It is only exciting if you spend 10 hours a day playing this crap.
The main point I want to get across is that the people of lesser skill should be playing on slower speed, but I know this will be impossible for noobs to get. I may try to explain 4v4 maps are more fun to play if the speed is slowed down and people can see what the hell is going on while playing. I almost wish to go back in time to when this game was first released to play the slower speeds and all the players were more open to different game types. But then again, all my partners are either too noob or too good. Lots of noobs wouldn't be able to handle a mass carrier.
I know that starcraft two is supposed to have all the things that made this game a hit in Korea. It just begs the question why a game like this took off in the first place. Turning back 10 years ago, this game had the smell of freshness and had THREE races to choose from unlike warcraft. The single player was very amusing as it included many short movies as you progressed. The storyline was indeed interesting. The game has been patched time and time again for a more balanced game. So I have to assume that it wasn't the best of games back then. But this game isn't fun for noobs unless all the noobs are together. And playing on a slower speed. That's the only way a newcomer can see the fun in this game.
I hate Korea for making starcraft seem like it's such a fun game. I see it is only fun when you play as if your addicted. I've read about how starcraft was released in Korea at just the right time computer technology became more advanced and open to everyone. Then the computer game revolution took place. Fuck you Korea. And fuck you starcraft. I am not having this any longer! At least not until starcraft 2... but even then I won't keep my hopes up that the multiplayer will be fun instead of made to be such a hotkey 'spend all the time you have to get better' sport. Seriously, it's not the need to speed up your movement that makes the game fun. I can't even explore the complexity of the game because the speed is so damn fast. I don't want to have to click with all my might every game, I just want to think about my moves and do it with at least some ease.
I made a game on bnet named '4v4 slower speed' and '3v3 slower speed'. One or two joined. No deal. I find the inability to play 4v4 on starcraft to be a big minus. I'm a casual gamer, I want a casual game. I don't want a game where it's necessary to play 8 hours a day or barely having time to think when your trying to learn. And I just have to accept that most 3v3 or 4v4 types of games are pretty unbalanced. I'm sick of 1:1.
I’ve had enough of this 10 year old game. I don’t want to make my control movements second nature, I want to casually learn the game on maybe 6-10 hours a week. And to play the game on a level playing field. Something isn’t fun only because there is always room for improvement, that is not what makes starcraft as great a game everyone is making it to be. I think I just about juiced all the fun there is in starcraft even after becoming aware of how deep and demanding it is, but now I see it’s not worth learning. All the practice and clicking isn’t necessary to enjoy the game. So I figure I’ll play the least annoying type of game starcraft has to offer (duh).

C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER
I put a halt on my iCCup playing and in turn I have picked up bgh and playing the computer on iccup maps. I believe what's been giving me the most problems is the difficulty of trying to constantly use hotkeys throughout the game, in getting as much macro as you can and still do good micro. Macro motions still don't feel natural too me yet. Build order isn't really much of a concern at the moment, because I could have all the right buildings and still not have good macro. The good news is that I can work on macro by both playing the computer and bgh. I'm not going to say this is going to prepare me for iCCup but it's a necessity to grind the motions into my brain.
I've been trying to avoid taking it too seriously, but since I won't be playing iccup, the pressure has lessened a lot. Also, when I play 3v3 bgh, most of the time whatever happens it beyond my control anyway. I either have one or two bad allies or someone on the opposing team does, but I shouldn't make excuses, someone much better than me would have found a way to win. It's not like I'm such a great ally anyway. It might just be me but a map like bgh can leave you responding to unexpected things. There's no telling what your own allies and enemies will do or if they will work together with you very well. Or even when you rely on them to do something, if they actually DO IT RIGHT. And whatever build order you do is a risk in itself, especially against 3 different races. They could rush, or go mutas, or tank drop, or ugh, it seems the best thing you can do is block yourself in first thing.
Oh well, its all for the macro motion anyway. I'll try to get 4 against computer and 1 in bgh every day for at least a week.

Losing Streak
Right now, I'm pumping myself up for 6 more losses. I beat one guy and I see his record was 2-11, and has 771 points this very moment.
There are actually guys are on there with 3-28 records. These guys have egos of steel!
Do I?

I have decided to play at least 10 games before I post a detailed report on my progress. So far... two losses.

Starcraft is Boring
This morning I decided to use an unpatch program I saw on iCCup to resume playing this epic game - no longer could I wait for the new launcher. So I get on iCCup and decide I want to work on my build/strat a little bit before I own someone. I played two games against the computer. When you play starcraft you have to be smart about what you do, it's not just your apm that matters. You could have a really high apm and know squat, you must first learn how to PLAY. I was thinking the hotkey/scout trainer I used helped me a lot but it really wasn't that much of help. Best thing I can do is to simply play, and I feel that's probably the only way I can enjoy this game at all. I just need to play it, and learn as I play. I don't think I've ever played ANYTHING that I didn't get better at. You see, I initially thought I would have to study this game, I thought I would need to know the builds very well, and I do actually, but I believe that kind of thing will come to me in time. Lord knows that reading that kind of thing on a forum won't help much. And lord also knows that studying the game in such a way squeezing the enjoyment factor out is not the way to go. I've already said I was going to get better as I play but now I'm not going to worry so much and let my mind wonder and explore the complexity of the game.
It will be a while before starcraft two comes out, it will be only then that I can enjoy gaming on bnet because my friends will have it. As good as I'll be, my skill would encourage my friends a little bit to learn to play, at least I hope so. Starcraft just might end up as a hobby. I feel that I'm only repeating what I have said in previous posts but I still feel the loneliness of playing this game, it's like playing basketball or shooting pool by yourself. oh well
So, I'm pretty damn certain this game will cause plenty upsetting feeling in me, but I know I will slowly get better, one day I'll be at the top of my game, it's important to take it in a little bit at a time. I haven't been using the hotkeys for upgrading and think I should try applying pressure with about 5 or 6 vultures using the mines (against toss). I've seen great things being done with early vultures.
Sorry about the title of this post, starcraft will never be boring, but is definitely a little bothersome to play -_-
Peace out homie

Proud Soldier
Should I be proud of myself?
Not really.
FPVOD's on youtube are so awesome I could learn a lot from looking at them. For instance, I do hotkey my buildings, but still I use the shift+f2 hotkey to take the screen to my buildings and click them individually. I believed it saved me a bit of trouble but now I can see that it's going to be necessary to do it different. Fafner pointed out I didn't use building hotkeys much, it's time to use them. But when I want to clean my base up and build turrets and whathaveyou, I will use the 'shift + f2-f4' keys. Ha! I'm kind of excited now because I know my APM and unit control will be better in the future.
Last week, the day of my birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME [22 years old]), I played one game of starcraft against a 150 APM guy. Of course he beat me but I was a little proud of holding off for so long, 22 minutes. My apm was 100. He seemed to be a player that likes to win economically and did a good job of doing it. Check out the picture, he has quite a few expos while I fail with my push (didn't drop mines or build turret like I should have either).
You can also see me trying to expand on the top right of the map. He handled that with these same units. I couldn't do anything about it. I was heading up shit creek.
The rest of the game he was totally overwhelming with his economic advantage. I tried to drop once or twice but failed. There were good spots to drop and harass his workers but I wasn't that familiar with the map.
Yesterday, I played two games. The first was a complete and total noob, the second had an apm close to mine. Although, strangely my apm for that game was 87 to his 103. I must admit, he had terrible unit control. If he were to use his units correctly and did one big push he would have done much better. And he didn't apply any kind of pressure on me so I was free to do whatever I wanted (I didn't push until a little later). When I finally attacked he responded poorly, very poorly. If you want to see how terrible he did leave a comment for a replay.
You know what, at least I won it. I should be as proud as I can of it. The funny thing is iCCup had some kind of malfunction (all players logged onto iCCup were affected) so my two wins weren't processed. How lame is that? I'm still 1-7. Damn you iCCup. Damn you to hell. Oh wait. It shows on my gaming profile that I've played 8 games, but if you click on match list you see 9 games. Two wins. Strange.
Not really.

5 More
It was a random time to play Starcraft but I felt an urge to whoop some ass tonight. As of right now I'm pretty heated about all the losses I've picked up on the map Wuthering. It's so embarrassing how easily I've been beaten. But, I did win one of them but he was a complete and total newb. My iCCup record is now 1-6 :-(
First game: I won against the noob zerg pretty easily. He had an APM of 56 so it wasn't any kind of surprise. No real satisfaction from winning. Since I have 900 points I figure I'd ban anyone over 1100. Maybe then I'd have easier opponents.
Second game: My protoss opponent had an APM of 186. Mine was 103. As I tried to expo he sent two dark temps into my base. I responded by panicking with my one vulture. When temps surprise you in such a way it's pretty much gg. See the two DTs?
Third game: By far the most embarrasing game yet. The protoss user had an APM of 88 to my pathetic 93. The loss was embarrassing because I know in my heart I could have won it if only I used my units intelligently and focused on making more units. Seems he went to reavers as soon as he could. That damn reaver killed 10 of my scvs. Nine minutes into the game I could have attacked him and totally owned, but was completely oblivious. He only had about 4 goons. Look at the pictures.
Terrible... I'm getting upset thinking about how I fucked this game up... I tried to whisper the guy for a rematch but he wasn't online. I need to take the losses in stride I guess...
..So my sucky timing allowed him to make an army. I pushed, didn't use my units well when I did and didn't back up my units. Not a good game! (Even though it lasted 20 minutes)
Fourth Game: Somehow, I wasn't signed in to iCCup so the replay wasn't saved. He could have hacked for all I know. It was a zerg guy and jacked me with lurkers even though I had 3 bunkers... I didn't have any tanks... so much for relying on bunkers.. Damn those lurkers. They are such a pain in the ass. You will get yours one day!
Fifth: Another protoss guy with an APM of 186... how strange. Mine was 103 this time. It was the shortest game of them all ending 5 minutes in. He sent two goons when I had 3 marines. At that point I came to a realization that I didn't especially know how to stop early goon attack. Unlike python, it didn't start the players on upper ground. I look pretty noob in this game.
Okay, so I know I fucked up by making another factory and not making a bunker. I was slow with getting my first tank. Ending the night with games like this won't allow me to sleep easily. I'm pretty sure I'll be thinking about what I could have done all night and dream of hotkeying units.
I came to another realization after the last loss. I didn't exactly have a set plan that makes the most sense. My gameplay is short of good fore-sight. The next time I play, I will think critically about the best choices one can make in certain situations. Meditation before a game seems to be a smart thing to do. I find myself extremely cautious and afraid of the enemy, maybe that's one of the things that hold me back from playing well. It always feels like the enemy has much more than I do, it works my nerves. Maybe it's because it's been so long since I've played protoss, who knows. I only had a general idea to make vultures and tanks, that's all. I panic whenever I see the enemy. Gotta work on that.
Tell me if you'd like to see a replay for any of the games.

Hotkey/Scout Trainer
There is this UMS hotkey/scout trainer that is really helping me keep up a high APM. It focuses on terran of course and the objectives are: 1. kill a zerg base in less than 15 minutes 2. pick up a civilian from an island to drop it off on a beacon 3. constantly move an scv around from a murderous zeolot that resides on yet another island. If five of your scvs die you lose (I lost 4). If you go over 1000 minerals you lose. If you don't destroy all of the zerg base in the given time you lose.
I've finally beat it after playing it about 12 times. A quick check on BWChart shows I had an APM of 176. It would be sweet if I could have an APM like that in a real game, but until then I'll have to work on my timing and hotkeys a little better. THEN I BECOME A LEGEND!!
On another note, at GosuGamers.net, they have Replays of the Week now. I checked them all out and found the latest one to be the best one yet. It was a simply amazing tvt game that lasted for over an hour. Amazing. Sure there is a time when no action is taking place but the ending is worth waiting for. You can check it out here. Enjoy
Disclaimer: You could still suck no matter how much you use this.

Two on the House
I just finished playing two games on iCCup. They both were tough, both were losses. The first was on a map I've never played before so I was already in for an ass whooping. The guy sent 3 or four zealots into my base as soon as he could and gave me somewhat trouble. It was a strange map because there was a narrow gap that only workers could pass, until the two buildings were destroyed. Then, nothing could get through, so I had to resort to drop ships. I had no expansion and he did. Took no time at all to fall behind. Then, he made about 6 carriers and destroyed my expo when I finally got enough to push out against his goons and zeolots. I ran out of minerals quite quickly once my expo was lost. My APM must have been real low and I'm just going to block that game out of my mind.
Before the second game began, I practiced my hotkeys on a UMS (Use Map Settings) map so I could build my APM up. Then I began to play against a zerg player. It lasted almost 16 minutes. He expoed and sent about 6 zerglings into my base. I fended it off and he tried to send about 13 a bit later. I killed him off and expoed soon after. I began my academy building really late. My APM for the game was 107; his was 131. It wasn't exactly a great difference in APM but I could do better. I slipped up for a moment by letting 5 of my units die before being KOed. I must have tried to hotkey a scv to go toward his units but sent a hotkey group.
Above you can see the last two of the six zerglings he sent to my base. I defended well using scvs and marines. But I didn't start a new command center or a academy. I'm at 23/26 units. His few units got my full attention. I need to work on doing other things when I've fended off a few units.Soon after, he sent 12 zerglings to me to put on pressure. I'm thinking he either wanted to stop an expo or really thought I didn't have much. If he was trying to end it quick, he failed. I still have no academy here.
After a pathetic muta harass on my minerals he went on to make about 7 lurkers. I've tried to do what I can but obviously didn't have enough to take the lurkers out. I ran away with my few marines with nothing to stop his lifted lurkers from going into my base. This is the point I began to officially lose. I had nothing in the bunkers and just a few marines and tanks. GG
I've got to remember to make my academy at about 23-24 unit supply. Once I get my medics and a few firebats, I should begin making tanks and vessels, scan whatever units he has, try to drop when I have enough and be able to fend off 12 lurkers. I'm thinking a ratio of 1 to 8, tanks to marines, is a good idea to try. Then, make vessels whenever the starport is open. If I see lurkers coming, I'll make three or four bunkers, fill them up and try to drop some marines before I begin to push. All the while making more units, defending and cleaning up my base.

Iccup Battle
Three words: I got fucked. Map Andromeda, totally fucked. And to add to that, it was the first time I've ever even played that map haha. I played twice against a zerg guy and he came with those mutas like a madman. I don't know if it was just me but I could so have gotten science vessels a lot sooner but I kept trying to use my marines to handle his ass. Bad move. He was really good with his mutas. And he had about 14 I could irradiate... that is.. if I had vessels.
The first game, his mutas were attacking and microing all over my base. Really slowing me down. I could barely make people. Then when I had my vessels I tried to attack but he overwhelmed me with lurkers and lings. Totally fucked. I should have had vessels much earlier and way more tanks and marines.
The game was strange because I had to fall back into recently picked up hotkey skills. I didn't hotkey so well. My marines were all over the place. haha it was crazy. This game lasted 19 minutes.
The second game I really tried to get into it and he came hard with the mutas again. I never got my vessels out... I should have tried a little harder to just defend instead of trying to attack, at least until my vessel came. But he put the muta's penis all over my base. And he fucked me bad. At the 14 minute mark he made his mutas into guardians. I just left the game.
You see I've played on iCCup twice before these two games against different players and I pretty much raped both of them. I looked at BWChart for one of those games and they had an APM (Actions Per Minute) of 112 while I had 101. It was a zerg guy and he had a whole lot of minerals but he still got screwed pretty bad. He never harassed me at all. I don' t think he knows how to muta micro either.
THE GUY I JUST PLAYED HAD AN APM of 213!!!!!!! Jesus Christ dude. Is that what D ranked players are like on iCCup? No wonder this guy raped me. You don't have such a high APM and be a bad player. Damn, this is ridiculous. I don't want play anyone with an APM anywhere as high as 200. I would surely quit if I don't get any lower level APM players. Man lol
I didn't even save the replay for the second game on account of how terrible I did. I see that I'm going to have to get my hotkeys down and timing right before I can get a higher rank. I've got to scan the zerg guys and if he's making mutas I've really got to make science vessels or I'm dead meat. Being away from starcraft for a while made me forget how much terran needs vessels. ha
As I further look at the BWChart I can see his peak APM was 342. LOL mine was 182. I can't believe this game is so demanding of skill. I knew I was going to have to work myself in to comfortable gameplay but this game was completely unexpected.
But one thing is sure. I've gotten a lot better. My APM used to be around 80 and I used to not know how or what to do most of the time. But I do now, I know what to do and how to do it but I need to play a few more games to straighten myself out. Hopefully they won't have an APM of 200 too. I won't play anymore today but when I do, I'll update.
Edit: I just looked on iCCup wondering why my losses weren't shown on my record and saw I have to play it on the 1v1 gametype. I played it on melee. Fail! So my record is 0-0, but in my heart it's 2-2 lol.

Raiden II
Back in the day , there were arcades. Places your mother dropped you off with five to ten dollars and a time she'd return. I loved arcades back in the day, especially this game that I've downloaded onto my computer: Raiden II. It's a shooting game where you play as a jet and with a birds eyes view of you shooting oncoming enemies. I love dodging their bullets, what can I say. Weaponry of the game includes missiles and guns. There are two types of missiles and three of guns. On guns, there is a powerful laser that blasts only straight ahead, there are red bullets that have a spread but you still need to aim, and a purple laser that follows the targets but is the weakest yet the most fun. The missiles either follow the targets or shoot straight ahead, the one that shoots ahead has more power to the punch. It's an interesting game because when just one of the enemies bullets hits you, you explode. And there are a lot of bullets. You are equipped with bombs too. They clear the map clean of enemies, the weak ones, and leave you seconds of safe dodging.
I downloaded it off bittorrent and even got Raiden III from a gaming website. My laptop doesn't have a powerful enough video card to play it, soI used the other computer. It looks so damn good on the big screen monitor that I almost forget how fucking hard it is to dodge all those bullets. Playing it on normal mode was next to impossible. You'd have to memorize each level and know exactly where to be when they bullets start spraying; I'll leave it up to the japanese to handle "very hard" mode.

Xbox Live
My brother restarted the xbox live subscription I started last year. I found out a half hour ago. I just played 2 games of halo 3. They changed the game options a bit since the last time I've been on. There is now a DLC big team battle and FFA. It's ranked though so I won't be able to play it with my brother. Because of my new pact I've made with myself for good health I've decided only to play halo with my brother or with my friends (that I know in person). But even then, I'm not going to play for more than two hours.
As for starcraft, I'm going to try out a game on iCCup soon. My computer's fan does not work anymore so my computer cuts off randomly when it stays on too long. It overheats easily. Hopefully this won't affect my starcraft gaming I do later.

Starcraft (Brood War)
This Blog is about the gaming creature inside that loves competition and playing. I plan to write on various games and sports. I'll start off with this computer game.
I love to play games. Throughout my life I have always has a gaming console in reach. From the Sega Genesis, N64, Xbox, to Xbox 360, and I must not forget my personal computer. There is much to say of my gaming experiences but I want to shine special attention on the best game I've ever played: "Starcraft - Brood War". I've played this game for about 8 to 9 years. I was about 12 when I first played it. My gaming sense was glued to Starcraft more than any other game I had.
I've played mostly with my best friends, and we usually played the type of games for noobs. Playing the no money maps was very difficult for us. My friends and I switched over to Diablo for a while but through time I drifted back to Starcraft. I loved the competition and the dynamics of starcraft much more than diablo. It didn't take real skill to play diablo, it only chewed up your time so you could level up your character; that's what I didn't like about it, I got a little satisfaction from leveling up but it got really repetitive. Of course, I was still in my noob stage of starcraft but I was still so attracted to the gameplay.
After having stopped playing starcraft for a few years, I've started back to playing it every so often last summer, still playing noob money maps. But it was fun to play all in all. I dropped playing it over the school semester but picked it up again when I came back home in February. The first few months were zero clutter maps but as I got really good at it I began noticing the major inbalances of the game. I would get so frustrated at how unfair the gameplay was, not to mention being unable to choose your teammates. The protoss race had the most unfair advantage because of their arbitor recalls that happened a little after the map max. I only play as terran on starcraft so we are the race that are hurt the worst from a good recall, and they are hard to stop as terran.
It was then that I began to play non-money maps. I didn't like the frustration of having the disadvantage. But I didn't really enjoy non-money maps because I would get beat easily, I didn't have a clear understanding how it should be played. I didn't know the amount of units necessary for an attack and I didn't have good hotkey control. Starcraft is going to be the only game I would ever play for the rest of my life so I want to be good at it. The only other game I've been playing is Halo 3, but it's no fun without playing with my friends. It's not much fun after the 800th game. To play one video game for the rest of my life is good enough for me. I don't want to keep buying games and learning the gameplay. Takes up too much time.
"Gaming With Redus" is going to be updated every so often (every week is the goal) with my progression. Since switching to non-money maps I've watched almost 300 games as an observer. I've taken delight in watching people play. I've only played about 20 to 30. As of this day, I will play on ICCup and write my progression. I've learned a lot through obs mode and have gotten down the dynamics of the game.
I've played an e-friend "Neal' many times and we have wins and losses with each other split half and half. When we play regular maps I have come to have better gameplay and a better army than he. He plays as protoss, then zerg a little less. There is no competition if he picks terran. Sometimes, we play island maps, and he usually ends up making all carriers or all bcs. They sometimes are unexpected so he wins more often than he should. I've got to learn to keep a keen eye on him.
The last game I've played with him, we were doing FFA with three of us on an island map. The two other players had protoss and I had terran. I knew Neal would go carriers, so I got a whole lot of valkyries. Little did I know, valkyries aren't as good as wraiths or goliaths when dealing with carriers. Not to mention how cheap they are. But protoss still has an advantage with arbs and carriers, they can pull back from goliath groups and can freeze my wraiths. It's a bit frustrating. I'll have to remember to shockwave the carriers and make ALOT of wraiths and goliaths next time. That's all I can do. Neal ended up winning even though he focused mostly on me. The other player was terrible, making very few carriers.
Now to put myself to the test on ICCup. In case you don't know, ICCup is a league of ranked gamers and has anti hacks so there is fair gaming. The rankings are alphabetical from D- to A+ with A+ being the best. I've played twice before on ICCup and won both.
